Public open space

The Recreation Ground, East Street.

This is the largest of Coggeshall’s public open spaces with the Essex Way (the public footpath from Epping to Harwich) running along the eastern edge. There is a children’s playground, a multi-sport hard surface area with basket-ball posts and an area with football goal posts and nets. Coggeshall’s granite war memorial is located at the southern edge. The exercising of dogs on the Recreation Ground is permitted and owners are asked to clear up after their dogs - ‘dog litter bins’ are provided.

The Tebbutt Garden, The Gravel, West Street

This garden commemorates one of Coggeshall’s outstanding citizens. There are picnic tables and benches donated by various organisations and the garden contains a small wild-life area. Dogs  are permitted but should be kept on a lead.

The Millennium Garden

This is situated at the entrance to the car park and was constructed as a commemoration of the new millennium. The plants and trees in this garden have all been donated by local individuals and groups. Please note that no dogs (except guide dogs) are permitted in this garden.

The Doubleday Garden
This lies directly behind the Millennium garden and is accessed from the footpath that runs alongside it. The area was once owned by the Society of Friends (Quakers) and the garden is named for the Doubledays, a well-known and philanthropic Coggeshall Quaker family.

  This garden is intended as a sensory garden and is planted with sweet-smelling flowers

Benches  and litter bins are provided. If feeding the ducks please ensure that this is done at a safe distance from the road. Please note that there is NO public right of way from the bridge along the river bank.

There are allotments at Butt Field (near the Parish Church), Tey Road and Coggeshall Hamlet.

The Essex Way runs through Coggeshall and is marked on the footpath leaflet as well as on the Ordnance Survey map. Footpaths run through Marks Hall arboretum

 Organised FOOTPATH Walks take place during the more clement months of the year, although there is always a walk on Boxing Day, and usually one on New Years Day. See the 'Monthly Diary' on this site for details of dates and times.

The walks are advertised on Parish notice boards and at other locations around the village. The Parish Paths Partnership footpath leaflet is available at the Council Office and the Tourist Point within the Museum.
